I wish there was only a “Top 10” list of web design mistakes to avoid. Unfortunately, there are many. Listed below are those Common Web Design Mistakes that we at North Texas Web Design strive to avoid:

  1. Professional Web DesignUsers must know what the site is about in seconds
  2. Content must be scannable
  3. Do not use fancy fonts that are unreadable
  4. Do not use tiny fonts
  5. Do not open new browser windows
  6. Do not resize the user’s browser windows
  7. Do not require a registration (unless it is absolutely necessary by the client)
  8. Never subscribe the visitor for something without his/her consent
  9. Avoid Flash if at all possible
  10. Never play music … if you MUST play an audio file, let the user start it
  11. Do not use a Home page that then launches the “real” website
  12. Include contact details
  13. Avoid breaking the “Back” button
  14. Avoid complex URL structures>
  15. Ensure users can search the whole website
  16. Limit the use of “drop down” menus, whenever possible
  17. Use text navigation
  18. Use a simple navigation structure
  19. Make sure your website is cross-browser compatible (Internet Explorer, Fire Fox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, etc.)
  20. Make links visible
  21. Do not underline or color normal text
  22. Make sure to use the ALT and TITLE attributes for images
  23. Do not use harsh colors
  24. Do not use pop ups
  25. Include functional links on your footer
  26. Avoid long pages
  27. Absolutely AVOID horizontal scrolling
  28. No spelling or grammatical mistakes
