eCommerce Payment Fraud Protection using Magento

If you have a business, you probably already have a website. If you have a website you are likely engaged in eCommerce. If that’s the case, you understand the importance of fraud protection, not only for you but also for your customers. That is why it is important to ensure that your eCommerce platform has a robust effective fraud prevention component.

There are many third-party eCommerce fraud protection platforms out there, but if you are using Magento you are in luck. Magento has an excellent fraud protection extension built right in and it doesn’t have additional service fees or subscription costs.

What Does Magento’s Fraud Prevention Plugin Do?

The first advantage is that you can minimize fraud by using your Magento Admin Panel. This makes it much simpler to use. So, what can you do with Magento’s fraud protection and how does it work for you?

First, when you review your sales records, you can see orders that haven’t been paid or that has to be refunded for a reason that doesn’t make a lot of sense to you. In other words, to you, it is a questionable refund. When you come across these you mark it as suspicious and in the back-end, it creates of record marking it as possibly being fraudulent. When you create this record, it adds attributes of the customer that will mark future orders and block them.

Another thing it lets you do is blacklist customers. You can do it based on name, address, IP address, zip code, and email or domain address. When an order comes in that matches the attributes, it blocks the order and no product is shipped. The good news is you can blacklist people by customer group so the customers you trust are not affected.

Though blacklisting is automatic, you set up the criteria. You can say three “strikes” and you’re out or just one. If you determine that the customer was okay after all, you can “whitelist” them with a click of one button and their orders will again be processed normally. If you blacklist someone you can prevent them from logging in again to your site. You can also detect and block them if they log in as a guest and add a blacklisted address during checkout.

  • Over the past 30 years of my career I have had the opportunity to work with a number of IT professionals. I have never worked with someone as good as Mike. He is incredibly responsive even for the smallest requests and makes major changes happen at a very fast pace. I am, repeatedly, impressed every time I have an interaction with him. He is so respectful of his clients and understands, especially with someone like me that has limited IT knowledge and capabilities, how to speak my language so that I understand what is going on. I would highly recommend him for anyone looking to drastically improve their IT capabilities and web design whether it be a small company or a large one.
