What is a Google PPC AdWords Campaign?

Google Ads is Google’s advertising system that lets advertisers the chance to bid on keywords, so their ads show up in the requested search results. This is one way that Google makes money from searches.

When someone uses Google to search something, Google looks through the AdWords pool of advertisers and decides whether an auction will be initiated. If multiple advertisers place bids on a specific keyword that Google thinks is especially relevant to what was searched, it starts a nearly instantaneous auction.

How Does the Process Work?

Once an auction begins, Google considers two factors to determine where your ad ranks. It looks at the maximum bid you specify for your keyword, and then multiplies it by your quality score.

Your quality score is a metric on a scale of 1 to 10 that is determined by several factors:

  • The rate at which your ads are expected to be clicked through
  • The relevance of your ad to the search query
  • The experience offered by your landing page.

The closer your ads and landing pages are to matching the user’s search, the higher you can expect your quality score to be. The idea is that you want to pay the minimum amount you can for your ad’s position on the page you are trying to win, if your ad is clicked on.

Let’s say three advertisers are bidding on a keyword. The first bids $2.00 and has a quality score of 9, the second bids $6.00 and has a score of 2, and the third bids $8.00 with a score of 1. The first advertiser would win the best position for their ad, the second the next best, and so on. The result is called the Ad Rank.

How Much Does An Ad Cost?

If your ad is clicked on, Google determines how much you’ll have to pay. It does this by taking the Ad Rank of the person below you, dividing it by your quality score, and adding $0.01. This means that the higher an advertiser’s quality score, the less they pay for a higher position.

This auction makes it so users are found by ads that are most relevant to what they’re looking for, and advertisers are connected with potential customers at the lowest possible price. Google AdWords is extremely effective as long as your money is spent on the right keywords and your ads are well written.
